A Journey of Endurance and Wonder
There are few adventures as epic as trekking to the base camp of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. Known as the “Savage Mountain”, K2 is far more challenging and remote than Everest, and reaching its base camp is a dream for many trekkers.
My journey to K2 Base Camp was one of the most physically and mentally demanding experiences of my life – but also the most rewarding. Here’s my story, along with the route details and some essential tips for those who dare to take on this incredible trek.
My Personal Story: The Call of K2
I had always been drawn to the Karakoram’s raw beauty, but nothing prepared me for the sheer scale of K2. The trek began in Askole, the last village before the wilderness takes over. From there, it was days of walking through rugged terrain, crossing icy rivers, and navigating the mighty Baltoro Glacier – one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions.
One of the most unforgettable moments was seeing K2 for the first time. After days of walking, we reached Concordia, the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods.” The sight of K2 towering above the surrounding peaks left me speechless. It was humbling, terrifying, and awe-inspiring all at once.
The final push to K2 Base Camp (5,150m) was exhausting. The thin air, freezing winds, and relentless sun made every step a battle. But standing at the foot of K2, surrounded by giants like Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums, made every hardship worth it.
The Route: A Step-by-Step Breakdown
The trek to K2 Base Camp typically takes 14-18 days, depending on acclimatisation and weather. Here’s the classic route:

4. Jhola to Paiju (Trek – 5-6 hours)
– A shorter day for acclimatisation, with stunning views of Paiju Peak.
5. Paiju to Khoburtse (Trek – 6-7 hours)
– Cross the Baltoro Glacier, one of the trek’s toughest sections.
6. Khoburtse to Urdukas (Trek – 4-5 hours)
– A shorter hike to Urdukas, with breathtaking views of the Trango Towers.
7. Urdukas to Goro II (Trek – 6-7 hours)
– More glacier walking, with K2 slowly coming into view.
8. Goro II to Concordia (Trek – 4-5 hours)
– Arrive at Concordia, the heart of the Karakoram, surrounded by K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrums.
9. Concordia to K2 Base Camp (Trek – 4-5 hours, round trip)
– The final push! Walk across the Godwin-Austen Glacier to stand at the foot of K2.
10. Return Journey (Retrace steps to Askole)
– The way back is just as challenging, but with a deep sense of accomplishment.
Essential Tips for the Trek
✔ Acclimatise properly – Altitude sickness is a real danger. Take rest days.
✔ Pack wisely – Temperatures swing from scorching sun to freezing nights.
✔ Stay hydrated – The dry mountain air dehydrates you quickly.
✔ Hire a good guide/porter – The terrain is tough; local expertise is invaluable.
Final Thoughts
Trekking to K2 Base Camp is not for the faint-hearted, but for those who take on the challenge, it’s a life-changing experience. The Karakoram’s raw beauty, the camaraderie among trekkers, and the overwhelming presence of K2 make it a journey like no other.
If you’re considering this trek, prepare well, respect the mountain, and embrace the adventure. The Savage Mountain will test you, but the rewards are beyond imagination.
