Trekking to Machu Picchu: A Journey of Perseverance and Wonder

There’s something magical about Machu Picchu—the way the mist curls around the ancient ruins at dawn, the sheer grandeur of the Andes cradling this lost city. But the real magic? The journey to get there.

My Personal Trekking Story

Last year, I embarked on the 4-day Inca Trail trek, and it was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life.

Day 1: The Warm-Up

The trek began in Cusco, where I spent two days acclimatizing (altitude sickness is no joke!). The first day of the hike was relatively gentle—lush green valleys, small villages, and the excitement of what lay ahead.

Day 2: Dead Woman’s Pass – The Ultimate Test

This was the hardest day. Climbing to 4,215 meters (13,828 ft), every step felt like a battle. My legs burned, my lungs screamed for oxygen, and doubt crept in. But when I finally reached the top, the view took my breath away—rolling clouds, jagged peaks, and the sheer pride of making it.

Day 3: Into the Cloud Forest

Descending into the jungle, the scenery shifted dramatically. Orchids bloomed along the trail, and the ruins of Phuyupatamarca emerged like a mirage. That night, camping under a sky full of stars, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace.

Day 4: The Sun Gate & Machu Picchu

Waking up at 3 AM, we hiked the final stretch to Inti Punku (The Sun Gate). As the first light spilled over Machu Picchu, the fatigue melted away. Standing there, surrounded by history and nature’s grandeur, I understood why this place is sacred.

Lessons from the Trail

– Mind over matter – Your body can endure more than you think.
– Slow and steady wins – It’s not a race; every step counts.
– The best views come after the hardest climbs – Literally and metaphorically.

Tips for Your Trek

✔ Train beforehand – Cardio and stair climbing help!
✔ Pack light but smart – Layers, good boots, and a rain jacket are essential.
✔ Stay hydrated – Coca tea is your best friend.
✔ Choose a good guide – Their knowledge (and encouragement) makes all the difference.

Final Thoughts

Machu Picchu isn’t just a destination; it’s a pilgrimage. The sweat, the sore muscles, the moments of doubt—they all make arriving there even sweeter.

If you’re thinking about doing this trek, do it. Your future self will thank you.
